Abstract

This article examines the historical evolution of asset management, from its roots in British terotechnology during the 1970s and 1980s, when pioneering initiatives emerged to integrate maintenance, costs, and asset life-cycle considerations, to its consolidation as a strategic management discipline. The field achieved international recognition with the publication of PAS 55 and was later strengthened through global standardization promoted by the ISO 55000 series. In Brazil, ABRAMAN – the Brazilian Association of Maintenance and Asset Management - has played a decisive role in disseminating and adapting these frameworks, expanding its National Documents from a maintenance-centered perspective toward a systemic and integrated asset management approach. The challenge faced by organizations lies in transforming maturity assessments and methodologies into robust, institutionalized systems aligned with governance structures. This study adopts a bibliographic review combined with a comparative analysis of the 2022 and 2024 editions of ABRAMAN’s National Document. The findings indicate measurable progress in maturity diagnostics and in the structured use of performance indicators; however, they also reveal persistent barriers, including cultural shorttermism, resource constraints, and weaknesses in governance practices. Overall trends point toward stronger integration with ESG principles, increased emphasis on professional certification, and the reinforcement of strategic governance mechanisms.
